Leaving the “Big Smoke” behind

Our Gary is not just a Londoner! He informs me that he is “Cockney.” There is a real pride that goes with being born under Bow Bells! And Gary reckons there aren’t many of them left. But wherever he was born, the Big Smoke’s loss is our gain. Gary left the London area about seven years ago and landed right here in Inverclyde. Well, what do you like about Inverclyde I asked him “The people are really friendly” he said. That’s good enough for me Gary!

Gary is the Maintenance Man here at the SHED, but, make no doubt about it folks, he is no run-of-the-mill handy-man. Gary is qualified in numerous areas. Originally a Maintenance Engineer, he tells me he “just likes to make stuff.” He once had a workshop down south where he made bits and pieces, including robots, patchwork quilts, and silver jewelry! He has much experience with machinery, so could usually fix, for example, a sewing machine if it broke down. Gary also has qualifications in upholstery and electronic servicing! He has upcycled wardrobes, made a pirate’s chest out of an old pine bed, and let’s not forget light fittings. He converted brass blow torches into lights! Now you’re beginning to show us up Gary!

His latest project is a vintage van, which he is making as a promotional tool for the Shed. Most of the wood he is using is scrap from bits just lying around within the Shed. It is largely Gary’s project, but he’s had a little help from Brian and Matt. I looked at his progress today and the project is coming on leaps and bounds. I asked him if he has a name for his new vehicle – he has now decided on “The Titan.” This is a follow up to the Greenock Titan Crane, which was built by Sir William Arrol & Co.Ltd. during 1917. Gary’s vehicle may not be as big, but his idea certainly is.

We’ve all spoken of thinking outside the box. In my experience, most people struggle with that concept. Not Gary. He seems to think outside that box on a daily basis, if his numerous inventions are anything to go by. Gary is a really quiet guy who has the gift of the gab! That may seem like a contradiction, but if you know Gary, you’ll get what I mean. Gary has a few pieces displayed down at the Wyllieum in Greenock, so do pop in and have a look at some of his produce.

Other inspirational ideas from Gary include his ability to run a successful Jumble Sale. He started off doing this down south to raise funds for childrens hospital wards. Then he took this idea forward this summer to help with funds for the Shed. Others questioned whether he could collect enough stuff to make the day a success? Not Gary – “I’ve collected stuff in a couple of weeks” he said. And yes! He was right, and the day was a success.

Keep up the good work Gary – What would we do without you?
