Happy Visitors

We had the pleasure of welcoming ten men from Govan Men’s Shed this week. It was interesting to talk with them and discuss their manner of operating compared to ours, here at Inverclyde Community Shed.

It could be perceived to be a ‘just for men’ set-up, up there at Govan, but, in fact, they too seem to be on the way to realizing the positive effects of inclusivity, and avoidance of the male – female divide.

Govan Mens Shed visit to The Inverclyde Shed

The membership at Govan is much smaller than here within Inverclyde, with the men attending on four days. But there is now a ‘Women’s Shed’ within the same premises, which takes place on a Thursday – they change the sign for the day! They were also able to share with us, the kind of experiences they had while bringing in someone to teach Tai Chi and also Yoga. It is interesting to realise how groups modify things to suit their own area. Long may it continue. And I for one, hope that the women’s side of things will build and – who knows! Maybe, eventually, they too will become a community Shed. We certainly wish them well in developing their organization.

The guys had lunch while here and started off with Cream of Jerusalem Artichoke soup!

Quite a mouthful, eh? It initially drew some strange looks but they all enjoyed it, together with sandwiches, scones, and teas and coffee on tap. Thanks to Margaret D. our Chef for producing this soup, based on produce from Gourock Walled Garden.

Several of our members got mucked into giving the guys information about the machines, discussed while down on the shop floor. Some of us talked to them re our garden projects, bee-keeping, and the many other interesting activities we’ve been involved in over the past year. One of the men asked about growing artichokes as they have ‘loads of big pots’ so we just suggested they give it a go. (wee) Eddie was particularly helpful in discussing the background of the shipyards, here and at Govan, together with discussing information about individual interests re machinery in general, which most of the visitors were interested in. Thanks Eddie – keep up the good work!

The group thanked us profusely for the lunch and all the information and attention received from us. This ended with an invite to come up and see them at Govan. ‘Right in the middle of the housing estate’ we’re told. Let’s hope some of us can make that happen as we all learn from each other, irrespective of set-up, location or anything else that may be different.  We are united in seeing the need to improve life for all re mental health, physical health, and general wellbeing.

A good day was had by all. MEET, MAKE, GROW, SHARE – we’re getting there!
